Travel to Rome (ROM), Italy

Rome the Eternal City, is the capital and largest city of Italy and of the Lazio region. It's the famed city of the Roman Empire, the Seven Hills, La Dolce Vita (the sweet life), the Vatican City and Three Coins in the Fountain. Rome, as a millennium-long centre of power, culture (having been the cradle of one of the globe's greatest civilizations ever) and religion, has exerted a huge influence over the world in its roughly 2800 years of existence.

The historic centre of the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With wonderful palaces, millennium-old churches, grand romantic ruins, opulent monuments, ornate statues and graceful fountains, Rome has an immensely rich historical heritage and cosmopolitan atmosphere, making it one of Europe's and the world's most visited, famous, influential and beautiful capitals. Today, Rome has a growing nightlife scene and is also seen as a shopping heaven, being regarded as one of the fashion capitals of the world (some of Italy's oldest jewellery and clothing establishments were founded in the city).

With so many sights and things to do, Rome can truly be classified a "global city".

Popular Vacation Hotspots in Rome (ROM), Italy

Italians are very fond of their landmarks; in order to make them accessible to everyone one week a year there is no charge for admittance to all publicly owned landmarks and historical sites. This week, known as the "Settimana dei Beni Culturali", typically occurs in mid-May and for those 7 to 10 days every landmark, archaeological site and museum belonging to government agencies (including the Quirinal palace and its gardens, the Colosseum and the entire ancient Forum) is accessible and free of charge.

In general, Rome's main attractions are free - for example, while it doesn't cost anything to enter the Pantheon you'll have to pay to visit the museums and so forth.

You are able to buy full day passes for €12 or a 3-day pass for €30. This pass gets you in to the Colosseum, Palatine hill, the Baths of Caracalla, and the catacombs as well as the Baths of Diocletian, Palazzo Massimo alle Terme, the Crypta Balbi, Palazzo Altemps, the Villa dei Quintili and the Tomb of Cecilia Metella

One of the best features of Rome is its contemporary and classical artwork and architecture. The collection boasted by Rome at the National Gallery of Modern Art has works which include artists Balla, Morandi, Pirandello, Carrà , De Chirico, De Pisis, Guttuso, Fontana, Burri, Mastroianni, Turcato, Kandisky and Cézanne, plus many more. Rome's newest arts foundation was created in 2010, a gallery which features contemporary art and architecture designed by the acclaimed Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid.

The food of Rome has evolved through the centuries and through many periods of social, cultural, and political changes. In the ancient Age, Rome was a gastronomical centre, an icon of food. Ancient Roman cuisine was greatly influenced by Ancient Greek culture. Afterwards, the empire's enormous expansion meant Romans were exposed to a plethora of new, provincial culinary habits as well as cooking techniques.

Rome is famous around the world for its beautiful settings in its villas and parks. Take a stroll through lush greenery and find yourself surrounded by a romantic, antique setting of flowers, trees, and a plethora of amazing architecture.

The Janiculum:

Built in the late 1800s, this beautiful street crosses the Janiculum hill. It is characterized by the equestrian monuments of Giuseppe Garibaldi. Villa Borghese:

Villa Borghese is the central and most famous park in Rome. You'll be rendered speechless by its flower beds, walkways, fountains and incredible statues. Piazza di Siena, is home to the famous Horse Show in Rome. At the Giardino del Lago you can rent small boats to go around the lake. View the seventeenth century gems, the Uccelleria or the Casino della Meridiana. The Borghese Gallery and the Museo Pietro Canonica, the National Gallery of Modern Art, the Museum Nazionale Etrusco di Villa Giulia, the Museum of Zoology and the Zoological Garden are all found right here. An overpass joins the Villa Borghese to the Pincio where you can view an iconic (and preferably sunset-lit) view of the capital.

Villa Doria Pamphili:

Discover the elegance of the seventeenth century in this wonderful villa. Its states and fountains are featured in a wide expanse of green space, the largest in Rome. A quaint bridge connects each side of the villa. For joggers and bikers, a series of guided trails is found in this park.

Botanical Garden:

The Botanical Gardens lie at the foot of the Janiculum. It contains over 3,500 species of rare and incredible plants. Created in 1582, it has rich vegetation, a small hiking trail and a large skating rink.
